Could their problem cloud their decisions and in turn harm their clients?

The best therapist is one who has bipolar in order. They have both the training and direct experience of what it is like to have the bipolar condition without the negative reactions to it (otherwise known as in disorder or bipolar illness). The requirement that a psychologist must be rational, stable, and deal with tremendous stress is a good one. The assumption that it is not possible to be rational, stable, and deal with tremendous stress while having the bipolar condition is the worst stigma of all.

It could happen but is very unlikely. They study so much and work in a environment to get themselves help they need. if there was ever a time where they did something harmful it would be noticed before it got out of hand i’d hope

Of course. Thats why a lot of doctors, nurses, and counselors get into the profession ; to help others with the problems they themselves have dealed with.

i don’t really know, but i believe that if they aren’t feeling well themselves, how can they help other people? also, even if you are cured, which is very difficult, you can fall back when a patient tells you something that gives you bad memories of your life. you know what i mean?

i wanted to become a psychologist, but my doctor told me not to do it, for the reason that i told you.

Sure. Having a mental disorder doesn’t make you incompetent. Lots of people you would never expect have mental disorders, but they keep them under control.

If anything, I would think a therapist with a mental disorder would be more empathetic towards their patients.

EDIT: bluegoat, people with mental disorders can be stable if they take care of themselves. I happen to know of quite a few therapists who have mental disorders themselves.

Unlikely. Most programs require future psychologists to go through therapy sessions…A psychologist must be rational, stable, and deal with tremendous stress. If not, they lose their license to practice. (psychology professor)
