I am 24 years old and five years ago I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Over the past years, I’ve tried numerous medications and I’ve gone to psychotherapy. I haven’t seen much improvement. I want to work and support myself. Do you have any suggestions?

I dont think the five year plan is best.

Maybe if you progress slowly, then yes, but most people can change their life fast and more efficient in shorter amount of time. No matter what you have done in the past. What matters is what you do now.

The brain can fix a lot of your problems. Medication is rarely the problem or solution for that matter.

“All power is from within, and is therefore, under our own control.”

“Every person is the author of his or her health.”

“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.”

“He is able who thinks he is able.”

“What you think, you will become.”

I think your life & your future are in your hands. Bi-Polar disorder is a very common and often diagnosed condition in recent years. Of the numerous people I know personally with this disorder all are productive, working, successful members of society. Once a worthwhile medication is found and sometimes found again if the medication fails to work properly over the course of time – then psychotherapy has limited value, in my view. Unless you have some more severe and more deeply embedded mental or emotional issues that need psychotherapy, I haven’t seen that it does much good for bipolar patients.

I think you are only as limited as you allow yourself to be by this disorder. As you may have realized and see in others – few people are FREE from medical/mental/emotional or physical disabilities that plague their lives anymore. You aren’t alone and you are only as limited by this as you ALLOW yourself to be.

When you feel and believe you are ready to take control of your life, then you are! Who says you have to wait for five years? Take a good hard look at yourself and determine how you want to see yourself next week or even tomorrow. Then figure out how you want to go about fulfilling the image you have for yourself. Be realistic and start with practical easy ones. Then as you gain your confidence back, aim high and higher. Of course, you can do it! Good luck!

Don’t put a timetable on your recovery. Failure to meet expectations can cause setbacks. I am a therapist and have worked with people with bipolar and similar disorders. Healing takes one day at a time. Educate yourself as much as possible; take medications exactly as prescribed; talk to other people with bipolar disorder. Take good care of your health and emotional and spiritual needs. Support systems can be very helpful.Therapy and meds are important but therapy is only a specific time alloted each week or however you schedule. Keep a journal and note your progress, what helps, what doesn’t. Sometimes the meds that help one can be not helpful to another. Another thought, are you sure you have bipolar? It can sometimes be misdiagnosed. Education is as important as therapy for anyone with a disorder. Take one day at a time!
    I hope this helps

Maybe you need to ry a different doctor or therapist. Not every professional is right for every patient. Try not to get discouraged. Be brave. When you go for treatment really open up. Talk about everything. If you can’t do that with who you are seeing now, maybe it’s time to change. Even professional athletes outgrow trainers. You need to up your guy. Please don’t give up. There is a reason you are here. You made me remember to be brave and open up too. Thanks.

my doctor said my bi polar symptoms were so out of wack that he didnt knwow hat to do, i have the most intense anger outbursts. or DID.!! he tried putting me on some medicine ( i dont know what it is, i just turned 21 and my parents still pretty much worry about everything for me, yes im blessed,) anyways, he gave me these pills, but it had side efect of diabetes and i dont want to risk getting that because i already have a food alergy to wheat (my diet is fu*ked) so i took the illegal alternative, i started smoking pot, REGULARILY, and i have never been better, no mood swings, my relationship with my friends has never been better, and i dont have horrible thoughts like cutting peoples throats and punching out their teeth anymore. i just smoke before i go to bed at night, so im sober by morning but feel refreshed and ready for the day, I work as a CAD designer at an engineering company and though i think about how fu*ked id be just from a simple pee test, i feel like i am doing what is right. this is my 5 year plan.

I think the answer is simple:
    Choose a side.

Which side is most beneficial to you and those you care about?
I won’t answer that for you… but once you decide, then support that side. By side, I don’t mean personality… I mean attitude, and point of view. If you want to stop being depressed, then defend that attitude and point of view at all costs. Use your positive thoughts, to keep the negative ones out of the picture. It’s not impossible… it’s just hard… I’ve dealt with a similar problem before.

The point of it all is:
To stand for something… when you know where you stand, you’ll know where to step when something tries to knock you down.

    Good luck!
